Knoxville’s different nicknames: Scruffy City, Marble City, and Knox-Vegas

Knoxville has earned many different names over the years. Located in East Tennessee, Knoxville is home to The University of Tennessee Volunteers. Knoxville’s different nicknames are silly, unique and a reflection of the fun, exciting, and beautiful culture of the city.

Scruffy City

“Scruffy City” is one of Knoxville’s nicknames. Knoxville was referred to as “a scruffy little city” by the Wall Street Journal in 1980 after its bid to host the World’s Fair. After this, Knoxville planted thousands of trees throughout the community. In addition, This helped end the misbelief that Knoxville was not a developed city. The people of Knoxville embraced the name, and it has proven to be a well-established city with a high quality of life.

Marble City

Another one of Knoxville’s most popular nicknames is “Marble City”. Knoxville earned this name in the 1900s when the city was a major epicenter for marble distribution. Consequently, stone from the area is found in many of buildings located in downtown Knoxville.

Knox-Vegas

Recently, the city has seen a rise in arts, music, and sports culture therefore, Knoxville gets the nickname “Knox-Vegas”. Knoxville is the hometown of the University of Tennessee Volunteers. Popular nightlife culture is provided by several local bars and entertainment organizations. In other words, Knoxville shows no shortage of things to do after the sun goes down!
